After the deadline expired last week, the Digital Hub Logistics team is currently looking through the applications for the Digital Logistics Award 2019. Even the first look at the pitch decks and videos shows: “The range of solutions presented is immense and there are very promising projects involved,” says Hub Manager Maria Beck. “This shows once again that the digital transformation of logistics is taking place everywhere and at all levels. Both start-ups and digital units from grown companies, so-called Start-ins, have applied for the Digital Logistics Award. Maria Beck: “This enables us to once again meet the expectations of our award, which is to recognise and promote innovative and creative business solutions for the logistics industry, in the third year running. The Hub launched the Award in 2017: So far, almost 100 companies have applied for it.
Jury selects 8 finalists
At the beginning of September, a jury consisting of representatives from well-known companies and the start-up scene will select the eight finalists from the applications. The jury consists of five members: Marcus Gropp, Head of Digital Supply Chain at Kloeckner Metals Operations GmbH, Dr. Stephan Peters, CEO of Rhenus SE, Christina Thurner, Member of the Management Board of LOXXESS AG, Claas Nieraad, Managing Director of Next Logistics Accelerator, and Karolin Hewelt of the Digital Hub Agency RCKT.
The finalists will then present their solution at the “Zukunftskongress Logistik – 37. Dortmunder Gespräche” in mid-September. A pitch session is scheduled for the afternoon of the first day of the congress, the 17th of September 2019. After the short presentations of the finalists, more than 500 experts will select the three prize winners. In the past years the presentations were often good for special eureka effects in the audience due to surprising and impressive live demonstrators. The pitch session will be moderated by Karolin Hewelt and Prof. Dr. Michael Henke, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML.
The entire competition this year is supported by duisport, Duisburger Hafen AG, and LOXXESS AG.
First look at the pitch decks
Basically, the start-ups and start-ups deal with all the topics and technologies that are currently driving the field of logistics: Artificial intelligence and drones, freight transport and electric mobility, platforms and apps for both the B2B and B2C sectors. In this way, the young start-ups can make an important contribution to the digitalisation of the industry: “We are already looking forward to present the finalists at the Future Congress with solutions that they will sooner or later be able to use in their companies,” says Britta Scherer, responsible for Marketing and Communications at the Hub.
The applicants for the Digital Logistics Award primarily address international markets, in particular the 800,000 logistics companies in Europe. Solutions for the Niche market will also be presented. Most of the applications come from Germany. As in previous years, however, international founders also submitted their pitch decks.
